Yes We Can!

The Utes' attempt for a BCS bid continues. They squeaked by TCU tonight 13-10, in a cold, blacked-out stadium full of gothic-looking fans. Of course, Utah required a last-minute drive to come up with a win - they seem to thrive under pressure. I don't think I would take any other quarterback in the nation over Johnson when the game is on the line (except maybe Graham Harrell). I'm not sure my heart can take much more of this...

Helluva game.

Yeah, I think I lose several years of my life with every game that Utah plays. My heart was pounding so hard last night. Nice job by Utah under pressure! Now we just need to be ready for BYU and we should handle them.

seriously a great game! I was getting nervous there for a while but then that touchdown was awesome!

Tyler -

Did you hit your head when you rushed the field? You seriously would take Brian Johnson over Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, and Chase Daniels?

That was an exciting game. Great win by the Utes and an amazing final drive. But I don't know how you can justify that comment about Brian Johnson.

Hmm. Good point Mr. Rummage. I think when I posted this late last night, I was still a little too worked up...

He's still one of the top clutch quarterbacks with a pretty good penchant for winning games though.

You can't knock a guy who gets the job done and BJ has proven he can get it done.

Great Game! The Utes Defense did great for the last three quarters and the offense showed up in the end when they needed to. They deserved to be on the same field as TCU last night which cannot be said for BYU. But if the game was played in fort worth, Utah loses that game.

Oh great BCS god...what say you?

So does Utah still have a chance of moving up in the BCS rankings anymore? or is #7 the highest they'll get this year...assuming Utah wins it's remaining two games.

USC is not likely to lose, given their remaining schedule (and I don't think they'll let another Oregon State fiasco happen). Notre Dame is our most likely ally, but their play is spotty at best.

Suppose that Oklahoma loses to Texas Tech, would that be enough to drop Oklahoma behind Utah and Utah could end up #6? If Texas Tech loses, they probably won't fall more than 3-4 slots, ending at #5 or #6-- unless they get blown out (not likely).

Of course, Florida still has to play Alabama and one of them will have to lose. If it's 'Bama, then they won't drop behind Utah (except for a blow out, but even then not so sure). But should Urban Meyer's Gators lose to 'Bama, would their second loss of the season be enough to drop them behind Utah?

Or better yet, what about a BCS game where Utah plays Florida? Kyle Whittingham could finally have the chance to get that Urban chip off of his shoulder.

Man...Florida vs. Utah. I wouldn't give Utah much of a chance in that game, but it would still be awesome to see. If you have watched Florida, then you will know why I say that. I am just hoping that Utah draws a good team. I would rather lose to a good team then win against a bad one (bad ones are any of the teams from the Big East or ACC this year). We don't need another Pitt...of course, that is very likely in my opinion. Let's hear your thoughts Tyler.

How about Bama? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/stewart_mandel/11/10/bowl-projections/index.html?eref=T1

Here are my thoughts:

Utah can possibly move up a couple of more spots - but only if the teams ahead of them lose. They are right on USC's tail right now - and if the two teams are this close when Utah beats BYU (cross your fingers) then Utah would probably jump them. Utah has always had the benefit of the doubt with the computer rankings. They currently sit at number 4 - so we're just waiting for the human polls to catch up...

My prediction is that Utah will be playing in the Sugar Bowl against probably Alabama, possibly Florida (but I think Florida beats Alabama in the SEC title game). I'm not so sure that Utah can keep up with any of the teams ranked ahead of them - but I definitely don't think Utah will get stuck with a team from the Big East or ACC. Those teams will meet in the Orange Bowl - a real nailbiter...

My hope is that Utah goes to the Fiesta Bowl again and gets to play Texas or Oklahoma. If they play in Tempe again, there will be tons of Utah fans at the game. It's a little harder to make it to New Orleans or Miami, Florida.

It's going to be great fun to watch how everything pans out - I'm just glad I've got my Utah-BYU tickets here in my hand.

I agree that Utah v. Florida would be too hard to watch (but it would be fun for Utah if --big if-- they won).

I hope Utah can jump USC. Other than California and Oregon State, USC has only blown out weak teams. But I gotta give credit to their Defense. I don't care how hyped up they are, shut-outs say a lot about a team.

I would love to see Utah v. Texas. Colt McCoy v Utah's defense. That would be a good game. And yes, I would take Brian Johnson over Colt McCoy any day of the week (especially during the last 2 minutes--McCoy had a chance against Texas Tech and couldn't convert)

Johnson is awesome on the last drive of the game, but he's been very inconsistent otherwise. Colt McCoy will probably win the Heisman. He actually came back against Texas Tech, but Tech just happened to have the ball last.

Cory said...

I agree that Johnson has been very inconsistent this season. But, in the end, Johnson has the undefeated season and McCoy doesn't.

As for the Heisman, you're probably right that if Texas finishes with wins, McCoy will probably be the winner. But what about Graham Harrell from Texas Tech. He was spot on (3 games of 400+ yards) against Oklahoma State. He's good.

alisquire said...

Yes, Harrell is good. He could easily win the Heisman.

I'd still take McCoy over Johnson. I attribute most of Utah's wins to schedule and defense.

Rummage said...

Don't waste your time here Al. There are some serious delusions of grandeur.

Cory said...

I don't know about "delusions of grandeur," just the _fact_ that Brian Johnson and the Utes are undefeated and the #1 non-BCS team in the polls.

Sure they haven't had as hard a schedule as Texas, Mizzou, Texas Tech, or Florida; but, they have had a harder schedule than Boise State, BYU, Ball State, and Tulsa. (TCU played Oklahoma, so they're not included in the list)
