Squiceland Day 7 - Bath & Salisbury

Day 7 - Bath & Salisbury - April 7, 2017

Breakfast in the kitchen.  There was some homemade bread and Nutella which kept the girls happy.

Lyla taking a tubby in the carpeted bathroom.

Did somebody say there was Nutella?

The rape was blooming so we had to stop for photos.

Lovely rolling fields of yellow.

We also had to stop and turn around for Ada to get another look at the pig farm.

That's not something that you see every day.

We made it to Bath and found some lunch at a street vendor.  The girls (as is typical) only wanted plain hamburgers from the McDonald's next door.

Next stop was the ancient Roman Baths.

There is a museum built up and around the baths and I thought that it was really well done.  The tour winds you around the different areas before finally culminating at the bath itself.  Back in Roman times the complex was far more extensive then you would have expected.

You're never far from a cathedral (or in this case an abbey) when you're in Europe.

There are all sorts of underground drains and Roman pipework in the caverns around the baths.

They wouldn't allow me to bathe here even though I needed it badly.

We were even able to sample the water from the spring.  It was gross.  To much of a sulfur taste.

The Bath Abbey.

From the Roman Baths we walked over to the River Avon.

We also stopped by the Victoria Art Gallery for about 1/2 hour.  It was a small gallery, but the paintings are housed in a beautiful top floor of one of the old buildings.  The girls had fun doing a little scavenger hunt in the art museum.

Our next order of business was to get our hands on Sally Lunn's Buns.

Sally Lunn's is an eating house established in 1680 in the oldest house in Bath (from 1483!).  The buns are like a large roll with just a hint of sweetness.  They were actually quite good.

These girls love chocolate.

After Bath it was too early to return to our farmhouse, so we drove down to Salisbury.  Salisbury is famous for its cathedral (built in the 1200s, has the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom and has the best preserved of the 4 copies of the Magna Carta).  We were too late to tour the cathedral or tower, but we got photos.

Kate was in a bad mood (it happens to all of us).  Sometimes traveling makes for long days.  Luckily, our girls don't usually have bad moods at the same times.  That would be much tougher.

We grabbed some dinner at Cafe Rouge, which is a chain French restaurant here in the UK.  We liked it enough to visit again when we came across one in London.

Tomorrow, we literally drive to France.
