South Africa - Day 10

Day 10 - Kruger National Park Day 2 - October 21, 2017

We started early today.

Alison looks super happy for it to be 5AM. Our airbnb had this awesome little bird watching treehouse. The owner's provided sound amplification headphones and binoculars that we could use to spot wildlife.  We were staying outside the park, but the park boundary (and fence) were only about 40' in front of this treehouse.

I'm not sure why everybody was on the floor. Unlike Alison, they were not so thrilled to be awakened at 5AM.

Our early morning paid off.  By 6:45 AM we had found our first pride of lions. They were quite far from the car, so our best photo was through the binoculars.

Kate taking a peak.

We stopped at a few bird-watching lairs.  We saw photographers with the biggest lenses that we had ever seen. Birdwatchers are a serious bunch.

Spot the monkeys.

Zebra.

Impala.

This was awesome. We came across two giraffes fighting with their necks. They would take swings at each other with their long necks, back and forth.

Talk about a pain in the neck (ha ha)...

Warthog.

A larger herd of elephants.

We watched them play in the water for a little bit before coming up towards the road.

A bloat of hippos.

A big crocodile.

I think this is a kingfisher bird.

Two crocs.

Closer to the safari camp we came across a troop of baboons.

As were we pulling into the parking lot another car flagged us down and told us there was a pride of lions about a mile further down the road. People were always friendly and looking out for each other.

This pride was just lounging on the riverbank.

A view from the lodge.

Lunchtime.

Imagine our surprise when we found our new favorite restaurant in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere.  Mugg & Bean kept us alive in South Africa.

A leopard tortoise that we spotted off to the side of the road.

Monkeys.

I don't think there were any animals in the photo, I just liked how the tree stood proud in the middle of the road.

Warthogs.

I was excited to see a dung beetle rolling some dung along the side of the road.

Ostriches.

Vulture.

We were back to our Airbnb by about 3PM.

The treehouse was accessed by this bridge from the 2nd floor of the cabin.

Orange juice at the upstairs bar.

We only ever saw antelope along the park fence.

This is the Crocodile River.  It was just over the boundary into the park. Everything was pretty dry.

This is the loft where the girls slept.

Tomorrow we keep up the safari adventure!
