South Africa - Day 6

Day 6 - Cape Town Day 3 - October 17, 2017

Kate says good morning!

I'm not sure what Ada is saying.

The plan today was to take a ferry out to Robben Island to see the museum and prison where Nelson Mandela was held for so many years. Unfortunately, the seas were rough and all boats were cancelled.

Instead, we moved onto our backup plan of riding the quarter rides.

We found lots of sea lions on the docks around the port.

This was a fun store full of knick-knacks and African animals made out of scrap metals.

Lyla was begging for her own personal ride.

Playground time.

A view of Table Mountain from the wharf.

Crazy hair day?

Crazy hat day?

Another Table Mountain pic.

Wharf views.

Lyla!

We made our way to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. They had a bonsai tree exhibit. These little trees were very cool.

Brace yourself for lots of random photos in the gardens.  We all took turns with the camera, fine-tuning our skills.

This is one side of Table Mountain.

An sleeping owl just to the side of the forest canopy walkway.

We found a salamander.

The Cape Town area is famous for the diversity of flora and fauna including many plants that are found nowhere else in the world. The gardens had a map of the 7 zones of flora and fauna throughout the globe and while most zones spanned across the globe, the cape zone was limited to the area surrounding Cape Town (see this abstract if you're interested).

The man. Nelson Mandela.  We wish we would have been able to visit Robben Island, but we will try again tomorrow.

Admiring the sunset.

One more view of the sunset over the city.

Dinner.  We tried hard to limit our driving after dark for safety reasons. Luckily, the mall and wharf were pretty close to our hotel, so we had some options.

Tomorrow we visit the top of Cape Mountain.
