Day 3 - Poipu Beach - January 13, 2018
Today we had big plans to visit the beautiful Poipu Beach on the southern edge of the island. But first we had a situation to deal with.
It all started just after 8AM when we received the message above. There had been some tension with North Korea recently, and we were on the westernmost inhabited island of the Hawaiian Islands. We were more than a little surprised. While most everybody else in Hawaii was calling loved ones to say their goodbyes, or hunkering down for safety, we just chilled and watched tv (and let the girls play their kindles) for an extra hour or two while we waited for sudden death or the chance to head to the beach.
The missile didn't catch us this time, so the beach it was.
Waiting out the nuclear missile.
Strutting cock.
There was a flea market going on at the Community College, so we stopped for some treats.
Beaches are great places to make friends.
Lounging on the beach. I sure wish I could lounge on the beach today (March 2020 - big snowstorm yesterday, pandemic, earthquakes, etc.).
Protecting the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal.
Snorkeling.
Another shot of the seal.
Boogie boarding.
After the beach we had one thing on our mind, shaved ice. We visited the spot where the Fresh Shave is usually setup, but they weren't there. They were at a park a few miles away that was hosting a big baseball tournament. We tracked them down and we were not disappointed. I think this was our favorite shaved ice from the entire trip.
Because of the baseball tournament, there were concession stands selling food.
The hot dog looked a little suspicious if you ask me.
Lyla enjoying her dog.
Tomorrow: Church and a flight around the island!
