Thailand & Vietnam - Day 7

Day 7 - Elephant Sanctuary - August 31, 2017

Today was an exciting day for all of us as we were going to get up close and personal with some elephants.

First was a quick stop at the beach after breakfast.

We rode in the back of truck to the sanctuary.

Our first view of the elephants.

The blind mama elephant eating an early breakfast.

Watching a video about the work of the sanctuary.  We visited the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary.  It was very important to us to visit a place that focuses on the humane treatment of elephants and does not allow people to ride elephants.  Their bodies are not built to carry heavy loads and it is nearly impossible to train elephants without resorting to hooks, sticks and other inhumane methods.

Next it was our turn to feed the elephants.

Family photo with an elephant.  At the time that we visited, this sanctuary hosted 6 elephants, all of which had been saved from laboring or riding.

After we fed the elephants we went on a walk with them and mainly just admired them from a distance.

This sign says to watch out for elephantine poop projectiles (that's probably not true, but you don't know any better).

Alison loves dogs.  This one especially because it would follow the elephants around and eat their poop.

Getting some itches scratched by the trees and posts.

Next it was bath time.

Doggy treats.

After spending the morning with the elephants, it was time for lunch.

The mango sticky rice was delish.

Ada ready to go swimming, but passing the time drawing while I took a conference call.

Pina coladas.

Playing around with the gopro.

The pool was right next to the beach, so we went and lounged on the beach for a bit as well.

We were right by the international airport, so we got to watch lots of planes take off.

We ate dinner at a small restaurant Russian right outside the hotel property.  Apparently a lot of Russians vacation in Phuket, so the main languages and cuisines were American/English, Thai, Chinese and Russian.

What a day. Tomorrow we take a boat trip to the Phi Phi Islands!
