Peru - Day 6

Day 6 - Machu Picchu - June 7, 2018

Today was a day we had been looking forward to for a long time, our visit to Machu Picchu!

We started early, leaving our hotel by 6:45 AM.

Waiting in line for the bus that would take us up the side of the mountain.

This was our first view of the ruins.

Machu Picchu!

Of course we brought our masks.  Our guide got a kick out of them and needed some photos to show his family.

The whole crew.

One nice thing about having a guide is that you can get lots of pictures with everybody in them.

This post has turned into a big photo dump. We lucked out with a beautiful day.  Not always a given at these elevations in the Andes.

Me and my lovely wife.

Lunch was a buffet near the entry to the site.

After touring Machu Picchu, we had a reservation that allowed us to hike to the Sun Gate.  It's all uphill from Machu Picchu and the first spot where hikers on the Inca Trail finally get to see Machu Picchu.

This is my awesome dad.

The view from the Sun Gate.  Machu Picchu is in the middle of the picture on the left.  You can see the switchbacks that the buses take to come up the side of the mountain from the town of Aguas Calientes.

You can just see the edge of Aguas Calientes in the canyon below.

One last view.  What an amazing place.

This girl is so sweet.

These ones can be sweet too...

Back in Aguas Calientes for a few hours before our train left.

Frog garbages.

We bought this painting of Machu Picchu in the market (held by the artist).  It's now hanging in our great room.

Mother and daughter in the market.

We took the train all the way back to Cuzco (or at least as close to Cuzco as we could get).  Did you know that even though Machu Picchu is in the top of the mountains, it sits a couple thousand feet lower than Cuzco.

Alison, Kate & Lyla all went to bed.  We went exploring Cuzco.

We couldn't avoid a photo with the baby alpaca.

Tomorrow, we fly to Puerto Maldonado for our adventure in the Amazon.
