Peru - Day 8

Day 8 - Corto Maltes Amazonia - June 9, 2018

Today our adventures started early.  We got up and were on the trail by 6AM.  We walked to a spot where we could watch parakeets come to eat clay. You had to get there before them and be totally quiet or they wouldn't come.

Sleepy and waiting.

Here they are.  A whole flock of green parakeets hanging onto the wall to get to the delicious clay.

A flying shot.

Some shots using the binoculars as zoom.

Next we went on another hike to Lake Sandoval.

A big tree in the Amazon.

Kate did not like what she was looking at.

Monkeys.

We never saw a jaguar, but we did come across fresh jaguar prints in the mud.

When we arrived at the lake, we loaded into our canoe and went for a ride looking for giant river otters.

And the rains came.

One of my favorite pictures.

This was one of our luckiest trips as far as animal spotting goes.  You can see the river otters playing in the water.  We were able to follow them around the edge of the lake for a little while.

Another view of the river otters.

Lots of amazing birds were in the trees around the lake.  We don't have a zoom lens suitable for bird watching.

After paddling around the lake, we hiked back to the main river and took the boat back to our resort for some relaxation time.

Lunch in a banana leaf.

The resident birds of the resort.

We had time for a little swimming.

That afternoon/evening, we hiked to a tree canopy viewing platform.  It took us up above the surrounding forest for some amazing views.

It was quite the climb.

We watched the amazing sunset over the river after dinner.

This was our little tour group.  Along with my parents, there was a kind couple from Belgium and a solo traveler from Australia. It was a great little group.

Ending the night with the mosquito nets deployed.

Tomorrow we return to Puerto Maldonado.
